Speaker's Introduction:
Dr. Vikram Sampath – born and brought up in Bangalore – an Engineer & Masters in Mathematics from BITS Pilani, MBA from S P Jain Institute of Management & Research and a Ph. D in Music & History from the University of Queensland. Best selling author of 4 books – including the most recent one Veer Savarkar that was launched at the hand of the Hon’ble Vice President of India and received praise from the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. Awarded Sahitya Akademi's first Yuva Puraskar in English literature in 2012 and also one of the 4 writers and artists to be selected by the Former Honourable President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee as a Writer-in-Residence, to stay at the Rashtrapati Bhawan for 2 weeks, in 2015. Vikram is a visiting faculty at two Universities and also participates in multiple government and industry committees at the state and national level.
Rediscovering Veer Savarkar
The subject matter for today’s talk – Veer Savarkarji - is very dear Prabodhan Manch. The platform was launched on his birthday and his portrait adorns the stage in every program. During the run up to the state elections, the long standing demand for a Bharat Ratna for him gained ground – and we remain hopeful and confident that this will happen. People know a lot about the life of this fiercely patriotic, often misunderstood, sometimes controversial and yet very relevant son of the soil. But as the Hon’ble Venkaiahji elucidated at the book launch – Veer Savarkar was very concerned about the 7 shackles or ‘बंदी’ that binds society and he worked relentlessly to remove them – his life had many other nuances that are not as well spoken about or appreciated.
