My Legal Pursuits ( English ) : Dr. Subramaniam Swamy
Prabodhan Manch Parle
As mentioned in our program last time, after much deliberation, Prabodhan Manch Parle got a legal entity status – in the form of an Association of Persons (AoP) and this allowed us to expand the ambit of our activities as well as our reach much further. As a starter, after getting our Income Tax Permanent Account Number (PAN) we also opened our bank account – to enable us to accept contributions – in cheque only NO CASH.
Members of the Manch debated on how best we could fund the activities of the group. There was an overwhelming view to move away from sponsorships of any sort – that would cerate unnecessary bias in both the topics and speakers that we present and also be a probable impediment to the very genesis of being an unbiased platform. We have therefore decided to seek crowd funding from our patrons – the audience themselves.
As a platform – we continue to be wedded to our goal of providing an avenue to knowledgeable – even if sometimes non conformist – speaker.
Speaker’s Introduction:
While the courts of the country are yet undecided on whether to stand up for the national anthem or not, but in the court of Dr Subramaniam Swami our speaker this morning – nationalism is never debated – you’d better stand up.
Born on the ides of September 1939 in Mylapore, Dr Swamy graduated from the Hindu College Delhi, got his Masters from Indian Statistical Institute Kolkata & a Ph. D from Harvard University in Economics. Dr. Swamy entered social life through the Sarvodaya movement of Jai Prakash Narayan and became a Rajya Sabha Member in 1974. 3 times Lok Sabha Member and now a 3rd time Rajya Sabha Member. Former Union Minister and an aggressive judicial crusader. – the whole journey is well documented and very well read. But what connects Dr. Swami to Vile Parle is the time he spent in Vile Parle during his most famous and active “underground” activists’ days during emergency.
The Topic “ My Legal Pursuits:
Dr Swamy could speak eloquently on many topics – from economics to Hindutva to finance to law. But based on the overwhelming feedback from the Prabodhan Manch loyal audience and given the wide interest that his legal pursuits have evoked, we specially asked him to choose the subject.
