With breathless news reporters and opinionated anchors bombarding us with noise 24/7, it is difficult to step back and think through on any matter in the public discourse. Prabodhan Manch Parle, is an Association Of Persons (AOP) formed by like-minded professionals who seek to address this gap through lectures by domain expert speakers, discussions, interviews organized in an open environment to help gain insights on important issues. And this lecture marks the beginning of our double digit lectures – the 10th in the series.
Speaker's Introduction
Born in Indore, Dr. Rajeeva Karandikar completed his Masters in Statistics followed by a Ph. D from the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. Thereafter, he had post-doctoral and professorial stints at Northern California, professorship at Indian Statistical Institute Delhi followed by a 4-year stint in the corporate world. He is currently Director of renowned Chennai Mathematical Institute.
His wide-ranging research interests include probability theory, option pricing theory, psephology in the context of Indian elections and cryptography. Dr. Karandikar is the recipient of numerous awards including prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize in Mathematics by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, 1999 and National Award in Statistics in honour of Professor C. R. Rao by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme implementation, Government of India.
What really made Dr. Karandikar a household name was when he pioneered the entire science of psephology on national television more than a decade ago. He has been associated with various media houses in designing and interpreting opinion polls for Indian elections over the years.
