Prabodhan Manch Parle
Prabodhan Manch - an Association of Persons with its primary activity centred around providing a platform for dissemination of views from authentic knowledgeable sources – is now almost 3 years old and this is our 9th talk. We are extremely fortunate that our database has crossed 1200 people. Of course, it’s still a bit of a challenge to reach out to all as not everyone has an email ID. But we do have a Facebook page and a Twitter handle now – through which we can reach out to you and you can visit for news and updates.
As a new initiative, starting this program, we are asking Social organisations to have a stall at the hall – so that they can demonstrate their activities to discerning audiences such as this one. This time we have The Indic Collective Trust (ICT) to put up a stall. The ICT is a Chennai-based registered trust formed by activists, intellectuals and civil liberties advocates who are committed to an Indic Renaissance. The broad objective of the ICT is to advocate, through Constitutional and democratic means, the right of the Indic way of life to exist and thrive.
Speaker's Introduction
A brief introduction of our speaker of the day. A native of undivided Andhra Pradesh, he did his schooling in Hyderabad followed by a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Anna University and finally an LLB from IIT Kharagpur. Starting his career with Saikrishna & Associates, it is indeed heartening to see that he has now become an arguing counsel in the Honourable Supreme Court of India under his own banner. Over these years, he has specialised in matters concerning Civil Commercial litigation, Intellectual Property litigation, Competition Law, Indirect Taxation, Information Technology Law, Consumer Protection laws and Drug Regulatory Laws.
Some of his well-known engagements include Tata Sons v. Greenpeace wherein the law relating to the interplay between constitutional freedom and IP rights was laid down. In March 2015 he led the team which represented online intermediaries before the Supreme Court in the constitutional challenge to the intermediary liability regime under the Information Technology Act, 2000 as part of the Shreya Singhal petitions. He’s also Counsel for the State Government of MP in the ongoing dispute seeking inclusion of the State as part of the Basmati GI.
He writes his blog “The Demanding Mistress” since 2010, is a regular contributor to the SwarajyaMag & was earlier to SpicyIP & a supporter of the Indic Collective. At this young age of 32 J Sai Deepak has achieved much. But no introduction to him can be complete without talking about his recent involvement as the Advocate representing Lord Ayappa and more specifically Chetana and People for Dharma or the Ready to Wait Campaign. As was widely reported, from an allotted time of 10 minutes the honourable Supreme Court listened to his arguments lasting over 2 hours.
The Topic – “Faith v/s State”
As we mentioned in our introductory email to all of you, J Sai Deepak’s fundamental contention is that the inability or unwillingness of The State to act appropriately is the reason why matters of Faith land on the doorsteps of the Judiciary. In this interlocking between the three, what is the path ahead. Without much ado, let’s listen to what J Sai Deepak has to tell us.
Can Faith ever be judged on the altar of the law? And is there no way other than knocking the doors of the judiciary to resolve matters of Faith? These are difficult on which, we have asked our speaker to throw light on in a very short time.
An appeal
Our donors have crossed 75 and this steady flow convinces us that our decision to stick to crowd sourcing instead of asking for sponsorships was the right way to go. We continue to look to your contributions in the New Year too.
