Speaker’s Introduction:

 IAS Ashwini Bhide was born in Sangli and completed her Masters in Arts (MA) from Pune University. She joined the prestigious Indian Administrative Services (IAS) in 1995 and had the honour of being ranked first amongst the women entrants. In a distinguished career of over two decades, she has extensive experience in matters pertaining to both Mumbai as well to infrastructure. She is the Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited a Government of India & Government of Mumbai joint venture that is entrusted with the Mumbai Metro 3 project.

Mumbai – the mere mention of this magical city evokes many emotions and the top of the mind recall is the sea, the crowd, the financial capital and of course infrastructure. When it comes to the last one – the one and only key issue for Mumbaikars is really transport. Development and infrastructure goes hand in hand with some pain value – who can forget the days of 1997 – when the huge network of flyovers in Mumbai was built. But had those flyovers not been built – what would travel in Mumbai mean? As the Government embarks on an ambitious project of constructing a huge network of 11 Metro lines – of which one is already operational – alongwith a new airport, a new sea link and another coastal road – the thoughts of another long and painful period of inconvenience stares Mumbai in its face. And add to this are questions of environment, funding and so many others. Of these 11 lines, the Mumbai Metro line 3 is the most complex and perhaps even the most important – and it is the only one being constructed completely underground. So who better to talk about this than the MD & CEO of MMRCL.
